It’s the eve of another new year; have you had a chance to review and reflect? Where do you go from here? Are you focused on what matters most?
I found great inspiration in the book by Gary Hamel, What Matters Now: How to Win in a World of Relentless Change, Ferocious Competition, and Unstoppable Innovation. It’s a good reminder that no matter what challenges you face, you thrive when you uphold your core values and purpose.
The problem with reminding people about core values is that it often comes across as preaching. But the truth is, if you know what you’re committed to in life and work, you’re grounded in principles. That’s a strong place to be coming from, especially when we don’t always know where we’re going.
I don’t think we’re anymore amoral than in the previous decades, but because everything is globally matrixed, the economic effects of unethical leadership are magnified.
The critical point is this: because the decisions of global actors are uniquely consequential, their ethical standards must be uniquely exemplary. ~ Gary Hamel
By definition, every business is values-driven, but an uplifting sense of purpose is more motivating than profits and promotions. Maybe we need to take a fresh look at ourselves and the values that drive us.
I don’t think leaders need to shy away from setting out noble values and purpose, even in the most utilitarian businesses. Money and prestige are powerful motivators but never as powerfully inspirational as a cause greater than oneself.
The world is too interconnected to ignore the impact of decisions. What matters to your customers, your staff, your communities, and society cannot be ignored. In any leadership role we are charged with being values-driven as well as making a profit. I believe that’s possible without sacrificing one for the other.
What do you think? Are you focused on what matters most? I’d love to hear from you. You can call me at 561-582-6060, let’s talk. And as always, I can be reached here, or on LinkedIn.
